India Slams UN Human Rights Chief’s Remarks on Kashmir, Manipur: ‘Baseless and Contrasts Reality’

India has strongly rebutted UN Human Rights Chief Volker Turk’s remarks on Kashmir and Manipur, asserting that the world’s largest democracy remains a healthy, vibrant, and pluralist society.

Speaking at the 58th regular session of the UN Human Rights Council, India’s permanent representative to the UN in Geneva, Arindam Bagchi, criticized Turk’s “unfounded and baseless comments”, stating they contrast sharply with ground realities.

India’s Strong Response at UNHRC

Bagchi firmly dismissed concerns raised by Turk in his global update, emphasizing that India’s democratic fabric has consistently proven such misplaced concerns wrong.

“We would urge a better understanding of India and our civilizational ethos of diversity and openness, which continue to define our robust and often cacophonous civic space,” Bagchi said, reinforcing India’s commitment to democracy, inclusivity, and progress.

Bagchi also took issue with Turk’s “erroneous reference” to Jammu and Kashmir, highlighting that 2023 had been a landmark year for peace, progress, and record-breaking voter turnout in provincial elections, booming tourism, and rapid development in the region.

Calls for a ‘Genuine Update’

In a sharp critique of the UNHRC’s global update, Bagchi stated that it oversimplifies complex issues, makes sweeping generalizations, and selectively picks concerns while ignoring ground realities.

“The global update needs a genuine update,” he asserted, urging a more nuanced and accurate assessment of India’s internal matters.
