Kanpur: Kanpur-based tobacco businessman KK Mishra, widely known in industry circles as “Munna Mishra” and often dubbed the ‘Gutkha King’, has once again come under sharp public and political focus—this time following a luxury car accident allegedly involving his son.
KK Mishra heads the Banshidhar Tobacco Group, a major raw tobacco supplier that feeds some of India’s biggest pan masala and gutkha manufacturers. Over the past three decades, the company has quietly grown into a powerful name within the tobacco supply chain, operating far beyond Uttar Pradesh with business interests spread across Delhi, Mumbai, Gujarat and other commercial hubs. A manufacturing facility linked to the group is also reported to be located in Ahmedabad.
Though the company projects itself as a traditional tobacco supplier, its scale of operations has long attracted attention. While official records reportedly show an annual income in the range of ₹20–25 crore, estimates of the group’s actual turnover have been pegged much higher, allegedly touching ₹100–150 crore, raising questions about financial disclosures. The business is currently overseen by Mishra’s family members and directors, including Usha Mishra, Krishna Kumar Mishra and Shivam Kumar Mishra.
KK Mishra’s name entered the public spotlight earlier in March 2024, when the Income Tax Department carried out coordinated raids at multiple premises linked to the Banshidhar Group across Kanpur, Delhi, Mumbai and Gujarat. During these searches, officials reportedly recovered large volumes of financial documents, cash amounting to around ₹4.5 crore, and details of an extravagant fleet of luxury cars collectively valued at nearly ₹50 crore. The seized vehicles allegedly included high-end brands such as Rolls-Royce, Lamborghini, McLaren and Porsche. Tax officials suspected undisclosed income, potential GST irregularities and other financial violations, though the legal outcome of the raids has not yet been made public.
Now, Mishra is back in headlines after a Lamborghini allegedly driven by his son was involved in a high-speed crash near Rev-3 Mall on VIP Road in Gwaltoli, Kanpur. According to initial reports, the vehicle rammed into pedestrians and other vehicles, leaving around six people injured. The police have seized the supercar and launched an investigation, with further action expected based on medical reports, witness statements and formal complaints.
The accident has reignited debate around the unchecked wealth of gutkha-linked businesses, the display of luxury assets, and accountability when powerful families are involved. As investigations into both the financial affairs of the Banshidhar Group and the Kanpur crash continue, KK Mishra’s business empire and personal influence are once again under intense scrutiny.
