Maharashtra Samajwadi Party (SP) President Abu Azmi has found himself in legal trouble after his controversial remarks praising Mughal ruler Aurangzeb, sparking outrage across the state. The Shiv Sena (Shinde faction) has filed a police complaint against him, demanding stringent action, including sedition charges. Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister and Shiv Sena chief Eknath Shinde has also called for a sedition case to be registered against Azmi.

The Shiv Sena (Shinde faction) approached Mumbai’s Marine Drive police station, with former MLA and party spokesperson Kiran Pawaskar leading the charge alongside party workers. They have urged authorities to take strict action against the SP leader over his remarks. In a separate move, Shiv Sena MP Naresh Mhaske lodged a complaint under BNS sections 299, 302, 356(1), and 356(2), following which the Thane police registered a case against Azmi at Wagle Estate Police Station.

The case is expected to escalate as legal proceedings gain momentum. Mhaske accused Azmi of hurting religious sentiments and stirring controversy with his statements. The police have booked him under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) sections 299, 302, and 356, which pertain to serious offenses, increasing the likelihood of strict legal action.
