New Delhi: The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) has made a significant claim regarding the visits of prominent historical figures Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar and Mahatma Gandhi to its shakhas (branches) in the past. According to the Vishwa Samvad Kendra (VSK), the RSS’s communication wing, both leaders visited RSS shakhas on separate occasions, and their interactions with the organization were marked by a sense of understanding and empathy.
The VSK, in a statement released on Thursday, confirmed that Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar had visited a shakha in Satara, Maharashtra, in 1940. The statement highlighted that during his visit, Ambedkar expressed a sense of “belongingness” to the RSS, despite having different views on certain issues. The RSS claims that Dr. Ambedkar was not entirely opposed to the organization, acknowledging the differences yet recognizing the shared goals.
In the statement, the VSK quoted Dr. Ambedkar as saying, “Although there are differences over certain issues, I look at the Sangh with a sense of belongingness.” This visit, according to the RSS, took place on January 9, 1940, as reported by the Pune-based Marathi daily Kesari. The newspaper clipping from that day has been cited as evidence of the visit.
Furthermore, the VSK referred to a book titled Dr. Ambedkar Aur Samajik Kranti Ki Yatra written by RSS ideologue Dattopant Thengadi. The book describes Dr. Ambedkar’s familiarity with the RSS and the relationship between the two. In the book’s eighth chapter, Thengadi asserts that Dr. Ambedkar was well-acquainted with the organization, though his opinions on it varied.
Additionally, the RSS communication wing mentioned that Mahatma Gandhi had also visited an RSS shakha in 1934. This further adds to the narrative of historical figures showing an interest in the activities of the organization.
As the RSS enters its centenary year, these revelations have sparked discussions and raised questions about the historical relationship between the RSS and two of India’s most influential leaders. The claims made by the VSK have yet to be fully substantiated, but they continue to stir debate on the role of these figures in shaping India’s political and social fabric.
