Former minister and Shiv Sena (UBT) MLA Aaditya Thackeray has launched a scathing attack on the Election Commission of India (ECI), labeling it as “entirely compromised” following its verdict favoring the Ajit Pawar-led faction in the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) dispute. Thackeray’s condemnation comes in the wake of the ECI’s decision to grant the NCP name and symbol to the Ajit Pawar faction, a move he perceives as undermining the democratic process.

The ECI’s ruling, which settles the long-standing feud within the NCP, holds significant implications for the upcoming polls, reshaping the political landscape in Maharashtra. Thackeray took to social media to express his dismay, stating, “When the election commission itself starts to legitimise theft, you know that democracy is doomed.”

The decision, announced after more than ten hearings spanning over six months, offers the Sharad Pawar faction a one-time opportunity to claim a new name for their political entity and submit three symbol preferences by February 7, 2024. Despite the ECI’s adherence to procedural norms, Thackeray’s criticism underscores broader concerns regarding the integrity of electoral processes.

In contrast, Ajit Pawar welcomed the ECI’s decision, expressing gratitude for the resolution of the contentious issue. The Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra emphasized the importance of democratic principles and accepted the ruling with humility.

The rift within the NCP, exacerbated by Ajit Pawar’s departure from the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) to join the BJP-led NDA camp last year, has divided the political landscape in Maharashtra. The defection saw eight MLAs from the Sharad Pawar faction aligning with the Eknath Shinde-led government, intensifying tensions within the party ranks.

While Ajit Pawar’s camp celebrates the ECI’s verdict, the Sharad Pawar faction vows to contest the decision, signaling a protracted legal battle ahead. Supriya Sule, daughter of NCP founder Sharad Pawar, likened the situation to past rifts within the Shiv Sena, attributing the upheaval to clandestine forces orchestrating political maneuvers.

Amidst the turmoil, Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde extended his support to Ajit Pawar, lauding the ECI’s decision as “merit-based” and reflective of democratic principles. Shinde’s endorsement underscores the prevailing political dynamics, with alliances and allegiances shifting in the aftermath of the ECI’s landmark ruling. As Maharashtra braces for heightened political tensions, the looming specter of legal battles and electoral maneuvers casts a shadow over the state’s political future.
