Khalistani leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar has been shot dead in Canada on Monday. Nijjar was shot dead by two gunmen at the Guru Nanak Sikh Gurdwara in the Punjabi-dominated Surrey city of British Columbia province. He was the president of Guru Nanak Sikh Gurdwara in Surrey. He played a key role in organising the Khalistan referendum in Brampton.
Nijjar was also associated with the separatist organisation, Sikhs for Justice (SFJ), which is banned in India. India had earlier asked the Canadian authorities to take action against Nijjar for his alleged involvement in terrorist acts in Punjab.
Nijjar, a notorious figure involved in acts of violence and subversive activities, was previously declared a ‘wanted terrorist’ by the Indian government. Recently, his name appeared on a list released by the government, along with 40 other designated terrorists.
In 2022, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) offered a reward of Rs 10 lakh for information leading to Nijjar’s arrest. He was accused of conspiring to murder a Hindu priest in Jalandhar, Punjab. The conspiracy was attributed to the Khalistan Tiger Force (KTF), with Nijjar serving as its chief.
