Srinagar: Residents of Yaroo Langate in Handwara area in North Kashmir’s Kupwara district on Friday staged a protest demonstration against the no supply of drinking water for the past couple of years in the area. Reports said that scores of people including women blocked Yaroo Langate road to register their protest against Jal Shakti department.
Residents raised slogans against the Jal Shakti department for its failure to provide regular water supply and for ignoring their sufferings in the absence of proper water supply in the area for past 10 to 15 years.
The protesting residents said that they will stage bigger protest if their demands are not addressed within the next five days. Angry protestors appealed the higher authorities of Jal Shakti department Handwara to look into the matter.
Locals said that four years ago they had received a Public Health Engineering (PHE) scheme through Engineer Rasheed but till date that scheme is pending. Local said that in 2014 pipes were supposed to have been laid to Yaroo but till date only half the work was done and the contractors are enchasing their contract bills.
Locals said that they had appealed to the PHE department to take back the water pipes to the Deputy Commissioner’s (DC) office as they did not need such incomplete work.
The locals of Yaroo Langate appealed to the DC Kupwara, Lt Governor and Advisors to Lt Governor to solve this problem within no time. They further warned that if the civic administration once again failed then they will hold strong protest on the Baramulla-Handwara National Highway.
