New Delhi: The controversy over former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s remarks on Yamuna pollution intensified on Tuesday as Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini warned of filing a defamation suit against him. Kejriwal, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) chief, had accused Haryana’s BJP government of “poisoning” the Yamuna water supplied to Delhi, alleging it was a deliberate attempt to harm Delhiites and shift the blame onto AAP.

Hitting back, Saini called Kejriwal’s statements “blatantly false and disgusting” and demanded an immediate apology. He further criticized Kejriwal, saying, “He has become an ‘Aapda’ (disaster) for Delhi. In the state elections, the people of Delhi will bless the BJP and free the city from this ‘Aapda’.”

Saini also refuted Kejriwal’s claims of water scarcity and ammonia contamination, attributing the issue to a mismanaged distribution system under Kejriwal’s tenure. “For 10 years, he failed to manage the distribution of water despite his promises. People are still receiving polluted water,” he said, urging Kejriwal to focus on governance instead of making baseless allegations.

Haryana Minister Anil Vij also weighed in, dismissing Kejriwal’s claims as lies. He suggested journalists test the water quality at Sonipat, where it enters Delhi, and compare it to the water in Delhi itself. “Cleaning the river in Delhi was his job, which he could not do,” Vij remarked.

Meanwhile, Delhi Jal Board CEO Shilpa Shinde wrote to the Chief Secretary, stating that Kejriwal’s statements were “factually incorrect.” Delhi Chief Minister Atishi, however, alleged that the letter was written under pressure from the Lieutenant Governor and the BJP. She highlighted that ammonia levels in Yamuna water had reached 6.5 ppm, far exceeding the limit of 1 ppm treatable by water plants, accusing Haryana of neglecting its responsibilities.
