Woman delivers baby in ambulance at Handwara, family alleges callousness of doctors at DH Handwara

Srinagar: In a height of callousness on the part of the doctors a pregnant lady on Saturday delivered a baby in ambulance after doctors at District Hospital Handwara referred her to Baramulla hospital.

Rubeena Begum Wife of Hafeez Ahmad Malik resident of Kalaroos Kupwara after she developed labour pain, her family members took her to a nearby hospital where from doctors on duty referred the case to District Hospital Handwara, the woman however delivered the baby on way to Baramulla.

Family members of the woman alleged a non serious approach of doctors at DH Handwara who superficially treated her and in no time referred the patient to Baramulla. “The on duty doctors got furious on seeing us, I could see them saying, these Gujjars are the biggest source of increasing population,” said Hafeez Ahmad Malik, husband of the woman. “As if the on duty doctors were in some kind of haste, they did not waste time to refer to my wife,” he added.

Hafeez said that her wife was dying of pain. “I urged doctors to admit my wife in DH Handwara because her situation seemed critical and she was screaming like anything but doctors did not bother”.

The husband further said that it was merely 10 minutes of travel to Baramulla his wife delivered a baby in an ambulance. “I asked the ambulance driver to take the patient back to Handwara hospital but he did not agree, consequently we reached Baramulla hospital,” Hafeez added.

Hafeez who is presently with his wife in Baramulla hospital appealed to authorities to take stern action against the doctors so that such instances would not come to fore in future. Hafeez requested for financial help as he is out of money.

Meanwhile Civil Society Handwara also expressed anger over the incident and demanded exemplary action against the involved persons.

Medical Superintendent DH Handwara Dr Nisar Ahmad, said that an enquiry has been initiated in this regard, “those found responsible will not go unpunished,” said Dr Nisar.
