Why Did BJP Choose Rekha Gupta as Delhi CM? The Strategy Behind the Surprise Pick

New Delhi: In a move that took many by surprise, Rekha Gupta, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA from Shalimar Bagh, was sworn in as Delhi’s Chief Minister on Thursday. The grand ceremony was attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, marking BJP’s return to power in the capital after 27 years.

But why did BJP choose Rekha Gupta over heavyweights like Parvesh Verma, Vijender Gupta, and Ashish Sood?

Women-Centric Strategy

Gupta’s appointment is seen as a strategic move by the BJP to consolidate its women voter base, which played a crucial role in the party’s electoral success. The BJP’s manifesto, ‘Sankalp Patra,’ prominently promised benefits for women, including a ₹2,500 monthly financial assistance scheme. By making Gupta the CM, BJP is reinforcing its commitment to women empowerment and breaking the perception that it depends on female voters but rarely appoints them to top positions.

Appealing to Core Voters

A leader from the influential Baniya community, Gupta’s selection also aims to strengthen BJP’s deep-rooted connection with Delhi’s trader community, a loyal vote bank since the Vajpayee-Advani era.

Grassroots Leadership and Fresh Faces

Gupta’s rise from campus politics to municipal administration, MLA, and now CM aligns with BJP’s strategy of promoting grassroots leaders. Her elevation signals the party’s intent to groom young and dynamic leaders, countering criticism that BJP prefers outsiders over homegrown politicians.

PM Modi’s Endorsement

Congratulating the new CM, Prime Minister Modi posted on X, “She has risen from the grassroots… I am confident she will work for Delhi’s development with full vigour. My best wishes to her for a fruitful tenure.”
