“Why Am I Being Stopped?”: Rahul Gandhi Raises National Security, China-US Conflict in Lok Sabha During President’s Address Debate

Delhi: A fresh political flashpoint emerged in Parliament after Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, questioned why he was prevented from speaking on what he described as a “very important matter” related to national security during the discussion on the President’s Address. His remarks triggered strong reactions inside the House and added to the ongoing tensions between the government and the Opposition over parliamentary debate space.

Speaking in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi argued that the President’s Address itself focused on the future path India must take, especially in the context of global geopolitical shifts. He said national security and India’s relationships with neighbouring countries could not be separated from that discussion.

“A very important matter in the President’s speech is a matter relating to national security. Our relationship between the Pakistanis, the Chinese, and us. There is a very important point in this article that I have authenticated. It speaks about the PM’s reaction,” Rahul Gandhi said on the floor of the House.

He further linked India’s foreign policy challenges to the changing global order, stating that the rivalry between major powers is shaping international affairs. “Our President’s address was about the path India has to take. Today. On the world stage, the main issue in international affairs is the conflict between China and the US. This is central to our President’s address,” he added.

Rahul Gandhi maintained that his intention was only to place facts on record regarding India’s engagement with China and the response of the country’s political leadership. “All I am saying is let me make a statement about what happened between China and India and how our PM reacted to it. Why am I being stopped?” he asked, directly questioning the Chair.

The Congress leader’s repeated assertion that he was being denied the opportunity to speak became a rallying point for Opposition MPs, who alleged that critical voices were being curbed during an important constitutional discussion. According to them, debates on the President’s Address should allow wide-ranging discussion, especially on issues of national security and foreign policy.

From the government’s side, there was visible discomfort over the remarks, with treasury bench members objecting to the framing and timing of the comments. The disruption highlighted the deepening confrontation between the ruling party and the Opposition, with Parliament witnessing frequent interruptions in recent sessions.
