Shiv Sena (UBT) MLA Ravindra Waikar’s recent move to join Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde’s camp has stirred controversy, as he faces accusations of involvement in a Rs 500 crore scam and other alleged wrongdoings. Waikar, previously a close associate of party chief Uddhav Thackeray, has come under scrutiny by both the Mumbai Police’s Economic Offences Wing (EOW) and the Enforcement Directorate (ED).
The allegations stem from the construction of a luxury hotel in Mumbai, purportedly in violation of an agreement with the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). Accusations suggest that Waikar used his political influence to obtain approval for the project on a plot reserved for a garden, causing significant financial loss to the BMC. These claims led to investigations by both local and central agencies, resulting in FIRs and raids on properties linked to Waikar.
Waikar’s political journey spans decades, starting as a grassroots Shiv Sainik in the 1980s before rising through the ranks to become a three-time MLA. His tenure includes stints as the Minister of State for Housing and Higher and Technical Education in the BJP-Shiv Sena government and as a guardian minister in the Uddhav-led Maha Vikas Aghadi government.
Throughout his career, Waikar has been regarded as a trusted ally of Uddhav Thackeray, playing a pivotal role in the party’s organizational structure and election campaigns. However, his association with the Thackeray family has also attracted scrutiny and allegations from opposition leaders.
In 2016, Congress leader Sanjay Nirupam accused Waikar of illegal land acquisition and misuse of ministerial power for personal gain. Similar allegations resurfaced in 2020, with BJP leader Kirit Somaiya raising concerns about financial dealings involving the Thackeray family. These accusations have often been perceived as politically motivated attacks on the Shiv Sena leadership.
Despite facing legal challenges and controversies, Waikar’s allegiance to the party remains steadfast, evident in his continued involvement in key party decisions and initiatives. However, his recent alignment with Eknath Shinde’s faction amid ongoing investigations raises questions about the stability and integrity of the Shiv Sena leadership.
As Waikar navigates these turbulent waters, the political landscape in Maharashtra remains fraught with uncertainty, with the outcome of investigations likely to have far-reaching implications for both the individual and the party he represents.
