Prime Minister Narendra Modi marked a significant milestone on Monday as he inaugurated the Gurgaon stretch of the Dwarka Expressway. Accompanied by Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar and Union Minister Nitin Gadkari, Modi meticulously inspected the expressway on foot, underlining its importance for the region’s infrastructure.

The groundwork for this momentous event had been laid earlier when CM Khattar himself inspected the preparations at the site on Sunday, ensuring everything was in order for the Prime Minister’s visit.

Key Features of the Dwarka Expressway

The Dwarka Expressway, spanning 29 kilometers in total — with 18.9 kilometers in Haryana and the remaining 10.1 kilometers in Delhi — is a vital link connecting Shiv Murti on National Highway 8 to the Kherki Daula toll plaza. This artery promises a streamlined commuting experience for travelers from Gurgaon to Delhi and vice versa, easing congestion on existing routes.

Designed as an elevated eight-lane access-controlled expressway, it stands out as India’s first of its kind, boasting an array of modern infrastructure elements such as tunnels, underpasses, flyovers, and elevated structures. Notably, a distinctive feature is the 34-meter-wide elevated road supported by single pillars, stretching over 9 kilometers.

Construction and Investment

The mammoth project comes with a hefty price tag of Rs 9,000 crore and is divided into four segments — two in Delhi covering 10.01 kilometers and two in Haryana covering 18.9 kilometers. The financial breakdown reveals substantial investments, with each phase demanding significant funding: Rs 2,507 crore for phase one in Delhi, Rs 2,068 crore for phase two, Rs 2,228 crore for phase three, and Rs 1,859 crore for phase four.

The project’s construction spans four phases, each addressing different segments crucial for seamless connectivity: from Shiv Murti in Mahipalpur to Bijwasan (5.9 kilometers), Bijwasan ROB to Delhi-Haryana border in Gurgaon (4.2 kilometers), Delhi-Haryana border to Basai ROB (10.2 kilometers) in Haryana, and Basai to Kherki Daula cloverleaf interchange (8.7 kilometers).

With the inauguration of the Gurgaon stretch, the Dwarka Expressway paves the way for enhanced connectivity and economic growth, positioning itself as a vital artery in the nation’s infrastructure network.
