Mumbai: A year after the passing of Ratan Tata, one of India’s most respected business leaders, a mystery surrounding his will has left many intrigued. Reports suggest that Tata bequeathed ₹500 crore to an entrepreneur named Mohini Mohan Dutta, a man known to only a few within Tata’s close circle.

According to Economic Times, Mohini Mohan Dutta is an entrepreneur based in Jamshedpur, Jharkhand. He once owned a travel agency called Stallion, which later merged with a subsidiary of the Taj Group of Hotels, Taj Services, in 2013. The Tata Group held a minority stake in Stallion, while Dutta and his family owned 80 percent of the company. He also served as a director of TC Travel Services, previously affiliated with Thomas Cook.

Dutta had a long-standing association with Ratan Tata and was reportedly close to his family. The two first met in Jamshedpur at the Dealers’ Hostel when Tata was 24, and their friendship spanned over six decades. Dutta had once stated that Ratan Tata “built me up,” highlighting the depth of their bond.

Dutta has two daughters, one of whom worked for Tata Trusts for nine years and was previously employed with Taj Hotels. Sources indicate that he often described himself as being closely connected to the Tata family.

Ratan Tata, who owned 0.83 percent of the Tata Group and had an estimated net worth of ₹8,000 crore, was known for his philanthropy. Throughout his life, he donated a significant portion of his wealth to charity. He passed away in October 2024 at the age of 86, leaving behind a legacy of integrity, business excellence, and generosity.

The revelation of Mohini Mohan Dutta’s name in Tata’s will has sparked curiosity, but it also reflects the deep personal connections that Tata valued beyond his corporate empire.
