Celebrated filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali marked his 61st birthday on Saturday, reminiscing about one of his most iconic creations, “Devdas.” The Shah Rukh Khan and Aishwarya Rai-starrer, which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in 2002, continues to be a standout in Bhansali’s illustrious career.

In an interview with Rediff back in May 2002, Bhansali shared his thoughts on the reception of “Devdas” at Cannes. Reflecting on the experience, he expressed initial apprehension despite his belief in the film’s potential success. He recalled being anxious about how the audience at such a prestigious festival would receive the movie.

However, Bhansali’s anxieties were swiftly dispelled as “Devdas” received a thunderous standing ovation that lasted several minutes. The director, accompanied by Shah Rukh Khan and Aishwarya Rai, described the moment as immensely gratifying, particularly amidst the initial doubts that plagued him.

The 2002 period romantic drama, produced by Bharat Shah, boasted a stellar cast including Shah Rukh Khan, Aishwarya Rai, and Madhuri Dixit in leading roles, with Jackie Shroff, Kirron Kher, Smita Jaykar, and Vijayendra Ghatge in supporting roles.

Based on Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay’s timeless novel of the same name, “Devdas” intricately weaves the tragic tale of Devdas Mukherjee, portrayed by Shah Rukh Khan, and his tumultuous love for Parvati ‘Paro,’ played by Aishwarya Rai. The film explores themes of love, rejection, and redemption as Devdas spirals into a self-destructive path fueled by alcoholism, finding solace in the compassionate arms of courtesan Chandramukhi, portrayed by Madhuri Dixit.

As Sanjay Leela Bhansali celebrates another year, his timeless masterpiece “Devdas” stands as a testament to his unparalleled storytelling prowess and cinematic vision, continuing to captivate audiences with its enduring charm and emotional depth.
