“What’s the Problem in Verifying Voters?” BJP’s Ravi Shankar Prasad Defends SIR Amid Bihar Uproar

New Delhi: Amid heated protests in Parliament over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the voter list in Bihar, senior BJP leader and Lok Sabha MP Ravi Shankar Prasad defended the process, calling it a “constitutional necessity” aimed at ensuring only genuine citizens remain on electoral rolls.

Responding to Opposition criticism during discussions in the Lok Sabha, Prasad said, “There is a lot of protest going on around this issue, but I want to ask some fundamental questions. According to the Constitution of India and election laws, who is eligible to vote? It is someone who is a citizen of India. So, if a little verification is done regarding this, what is the problem?”

His remarks come amid an intense political row over the Bihar Election Commission’s decision to carry out a thorough verification of voters under the SIR exercise. Opposition parties have alleged that the move could lead to large-scale voter deletions and discrimination, particularly against marginalized communities.

However, Prasad dismissed these concerns, stressing that the verification drive was within the legal framework and necessary for the integrity of the democratic process. “This is not about targeting anyone. It’s about ensuring that only Indian citizens vote. What could be more democratic than that?” he added.
