Moscow: Former Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad is at the center of controversy after reports surfaced alleging a suspected poisoning attempt while he resides in Russia. Assad reportedly fell ill on Sunday, experiencing severe breathing difficulties and coughing fits before receiving medical attention that stabilized his condition.

The allegations, yet to be confirmed, originated from General SVR, a social media account claiming to be run by a former Russian intelligence officer. The account stated that Assad displayed symptoms consistent with poisoning and that traces of toxic substances were allegedly found in his system during medical tests.

Assad has been living under the protection of Russian President Vladimir Putin since fleeing Syria on December 8, following the rebel takeover of Damascus. Speculation has arisen that strained relations between Assad and Putin could be linked to the alleged attempt.

Neither Syrian nor Russian authorities have addressed the claims, adding to the uncertainty surrounding the incident. The lack of official confirmation has fueled further intrigue, with international observers questioning the validity of the allegations and their potential implications for Assad’s precarious position in exile.

As investigations—or official statements—remain absent, the claims continue to provoke debate over their authenticity and the motivations behind them.
