In an unusual alignment of political interests, BJP MP Nishikant Dubey on Wednesday supported the Opposition’s demand for extending the tenure of the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) on the Waqf Amendment Bill. During a JPC meeting, Dubey moved a resolution, aligning with Opposition MPs who argued that additional time was essential for comprehensive deliberation on the bill. The proposal for the extension is expected to be introduced in Parliament on Thursday.
Earlier in the day, the JPC meeting witnessed high drama as Opposition members staged a walkout, accusing the committee chairperson, Jagdambika Pal, of rushing proceedings to meet the November 29 deadline. The walkout included prominent leaders such as Gaurav Gogoi (Congress), A Raja (DMK), Sanjay Singh (AAP), and Kalyan Banerjee (TMC). They criticized Pal for allegedly prioritizing deadlines over due legislative scrutiny.
However, tensions eased when indications emerged that the chairperson might request an extension of the JPC’s term. The protesting members returned to the meeting an hour later, signaling a potential consensus on the need for more deliberation.
“The process of evaluating the Waqf Amendment Bill cannot be completed in a rushed manner,” one Opposition MP reportedly remarked, emphasizing the significance of thorough examination given the bill’s implications for minority community rights and property regulations.
Nishikant Dubey’s support for the extension reflects a rare moment of bipartisan agreement in a politically charged Parliament. Observers note that the extension, if granted, would allow the JPC to address the concerns raised by various stakeholders and Opposition members who argue that the current timeline undermines the legislative process.
The Waqf Amendment Bill has been at the center of political debate, with several parties calling for a detailed analysis of its impact on the administration of Waqf properties. The upcoming session in Parliament will be critical in determining whether the JPC gets the additional time to ensure a comprehensive review.
