Congress Picks VD Satheesan to Lead Kerala, Ends Days of Speculation Over Chief Minister Face

Congress Announces New Leadership in Kerala

Ending days of intense political speculation, the Congress on Thursday officially declared senior party leader V. D. Satheesan as the next Chief Minister of Kerala following the party-led alliance’s victory in the Assembly elections.

The announcement was made by Congress’ Kerala in-charge Deepa Dasmunsi, bringing clarity to the leadership question that had dominated political discussions since the election results.

Leadership Decision Finalised After Top-Level Consultations

The decision came shortly after a high-level meeting between senior Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge in New Delhi.

Party leaders described the selection as a consensus-backed move aimed at providing stable leadership to the new government in Kerala.

State Congress leaders welcomed the decision, calling Satheesan an experienced and grounded political figure with strong organisational backing.

Veteran Legislator to Take Charge

Satheesan currently serves as the Leader of Opposition in the outgoing Kerala Assembly and has remained one of the Congress party’s most prominent faces in the state.

A native of the Kochi region, Satheesan began his public life through student politics before gradually rising through the ranks of the Congress organisation. He was associated with the Kerala Students Union and later became active in the Youth Congress.

Before entering full-time politics, he practised law at the Kerala High Court for several years.

Six-Time MLA From Paravur

Satheesan has represented the Paravur Assembly constituency in Ernakulam district multiple times since first winning the seat in 2001.

He successfully retained the constituency in successive Assembly elections and is now set to assume the state’s top political office after the Congress-led alliance secured a strong mandate.

Congress-Led UDF Registers Strong Electoral Performance

The United Democratic Front (UDF), led by the Congress, delivered an impressive performance in the recently concluded Assembly elections, winning a clear majority in the state legislature.

The Congress itself emerged with 63 seats within the alliance tally, strengthening its position in Kerala politics after years of intense electoral competition with the Left Democratic Front.

With Satheesan now chosen to lead the government, attention is expected to shift towards cabinet formation and the party’s governance roadmap for the next term.
