In a major escalation of the ongoing Middle East conflict, the United States confirmed that it carried out a large-scale strike destroying the main headquarters of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). The move marks one of the most serious direct military confrontations between Washington and Tehran in recent years.
According to United States Central Command (CENTCOM), the operation targeted what officials described as the core command facility responsible for coordinating IRGC operations across the region. US officials stated that the strike aimed to significantly weaken Iran’s military leadership structure. In its official statement, CENTCOM said the IRGC had been responsible for attacks that led to the deaths of over 1,000 Americans over the past several decades and described the strike as a decisive action to neutralize that threat.
Israel Expands Military Offensive Inside Iran
At the same time, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) confirmed it launched extensive airstrikes on multiple Iranian military facilities. Israeli officials said the operations targeted command centres, intelligence hubs, air force bases and internal security installations linked to the IRGC.
Explosions were reported in several parts of Tehran and other strategic locations. Israeli military sources stated that the objective was to disrupt Iran’s ability to coordinate military responses and to dismantle key elements of its command-and-control network.
Leadership Crisis After Death of Ali Khamenei
The conflict intensified further following reports confirming the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei. His death has created significant uncertainty within Iran’s political and military establishment.
Iranian authorities announced the formation of an interim three-member leadership council to manage national affairs until a new Supreme Leader is selected. Cleric Alireza Arafi has reportedly been appointed as part of this temporary governing structure. Analysts say the sudden leadership vacuum during an active military confrontation increases the risk of instability within the country.
Iran Responds With Missile and Drone Attacks
In retaliation, Iran launched multiple missiles and armed drones targeting Israeli territory and US military installations in the Gulf region. Defense systems in Israel intercepted several projectiles, while US bases across the region were placed on high alert.
Regional governments are closely monitoring the situation as fears grow that continued exchanges could expand into a broader conflict involving additional countries.
Rising Global Concern Over Wider War
The rapid escalation between the United States, Israel and Iran has alarmed global powers. Energy markets reacted with volatility amid concerns over potential disruptions to oil supplies from the region. Diplomatic efforts are reportedly underway to prevent further escalation, but military activity continues.
With active strikes, retaliatory attacks and a leadership transition unfolding in Tehran, the situation remains highly unstable. Observers warn that the coming days will be critical in determining whether tensions de-escalate or evolve into a larger regional war.
