Authorities in Srinagar have stepped up security measures across key parts of the city following reports of the assassination of Iran’s Supreme Leader, a development that has sparked emotional reactions in sections of the Valley.
Police and paramilitary forces were deployed in large numbers around Lal Chowk, with barricades placed on approach roads to prevent gatherings. Access to the historic Ghanta Ghar clock tower was restricted to avoid the possibility of protests or public demonstrations.
Schools Closed, Exams Postponed
As a precautionary step, the administration ordered the closure of all schools and educational institutions across the Kashmir Valley for two days. Officials said the decision was taken to ensure student safety and prevent any untoward incidents amid heightened tensions.
The University of Kashmir also announced the postponement of ongoing examinations, stating that revised dates would be communicated later.
Education authorities indicated that the situation would be reviewed before deciding on further closures.
Internet Curbs to Prevent Rumour Spread
Mobile internet speeds were reduced across several districts in the Valley. Officials described the move as a preventive measure aimed at curbing the spread of provocative or misleading content circulating on social media platforms.
Security agencies expressed concern that viral videos and images from Iran were fuelling strong reactions locally. Monitoring of online activity has been intensified to prevent misinformation from triggering unrest.
Security Presence Increased
Additional checkpoints have been set up in sensitive areas, and movement in certain localities is being closely observed. Senior officials said the steps were precautionary and intended to maintain law and order during a sensitive period.
Authorities emphasised that the restrictions are temporary and subject to review based on ground conditions.
Omar Abdullah Urges Restraint
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah called for calm and urged security agencies to handle the situation with sensitivity. He stated that individuals expressing grief should be allowed to do so peacefully and stressed that excessive force or unnecessary restrictions should be avoided.
Abdullah also confirmed that the Jammu and Kashmir government is coordinating with the Ministry of External Affairs to ensure the safety of residents from the Union Territory who are currently in Iran.
