The US House of Representatives has passed a bill that would require TikTok’s Chinese owner, ByteDance, to divest its US assets within six months or face a ban. The bill received overwhelming support with a vote of 352-65, indicating bipartisan backing. However, its future in the Senate is uncertain, as some senators prefer a different approach to regulating foreign-owned apps with potential security concerns.

Democratic Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer has not yet outlined his plans regarding the bill. TikTok’s fate has become a significant issue in Washington, with lawmakers receiving numerous calls from teenaged TikTok users opposing the legislation. This bill is part of broader efforts in response to US national security concerns related to China. President Joe Biden has indicated his intention to sign the bill, while the White House national security adviser emphasized the goal of ending Chinese ownership rather than banning TikTok altogether.
