New Delhi: Union Minister Ranveet Singh Bittu has alleged that pro-Khalistan operatives associated with the outfit ‘Waris Punjab De’ were plotting to assassinate him and other prominent political leaders from Punjab. The revelation, Bittu claimed, came to light through leaked WhatsApp chat screenshots circulating on social media, which exposed the sinister conspiracy.
The chats allegedly detail threats against both Bittu and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, reportedly in retaliation for the recent extension of the detention of radical preacher Amritpal Singh under the National Security Act (NSA). Amritpal, who is currently imprisoned in Assam’s Dibrugarh jail, had his detention prolonged by another year by the Punjab government.
Amritpal, 32, an independent MP representing Khadoor Sahib, was detained under the NSA following his arrest on April 23, 2023. His association with extremist elements and inflammatory rhetoric had drawn scrutiny from security agencies nationwide.
Condemning the conspiracy, Minister Bittu launched a scathing attack on the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP)-led Punjab government. “The AAP government is taking a lenient stance towards criminal elements masquerading as political activists,” he said. “The Centre will not allow anti-national forces to destabilise Punjab.”
Invoking his family’s history of sacrifice, Bittu said he would not be cowed by extremist threats. “My grandfather, Beant Singh, laid down his life for peace in Punjab. I come from a family of martyrs. I am not intimidated by extremist threats. I will not allow Punjab to descend into darkness again. Those behind this conspiracy will face the consequences,” he declared.
