As the Lok Sabha Elections approach, the INDIA alliance faces escalating challenges, with the crucial issue of seat-sharing creating discord among its members. Less than three months remain until the polls, and the alliance is struggling to reach a consensus on seat allocation in several states.

The alliance encountered its first hurdle in Maharashtra, where the Shiv Sena, led by Uddhav Thackeray, showed reluctance to share seats with the Congress. Now, in West Bengal, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has hinted that her party, Trinamool Congress (TMC), may contest independently on all 42 Lok Sabha seats in the state.

During a closed-door organizational meeting of the party’s Murshidabad district unit, Mamata Banerjee emphasized that if “due importance” is not accorded to TMC within the alliance, her party is prepared to take an independent stance in the upcoming elections. This statement follows the Shiv Sena’s earlier reluctance in Maharashtra.

Sources within the TMC disclosed to Zee News that Mamata Banerjee underscored the significance of TMC as a crucial partner in the alliance. However, she expressed dissatisfaction with the perceived favoring of RSP, CPI, and CPI(M) in Bengal, hinting at a potential departure from the alliance. The Left Front, Congress, and TMC collectively form the opposition alliance ‘India.’ In West Bengal, the CPI(M) and Congress have formed a separate alliance against both TMC and BJP.

The discord within the ‘India’ alliance is particularly pronounced in West Bengal, where seat allocation has become a contentious issue between Congress and TMC. The Congress rejected TMC’s proposal of two seats, based on the 2019 Lok Sabha election outcomes, leading to heightened tensions between the two parties. Mamata Banerjee’s remarks came shortly after a Congress leader asserted that the party would not “beg” for seats from the Trinamool Congress.

As the INDIA alliance grapples with internal conflicts, the seat-sharing dilemma poses a significant challenge to the unity and effectiveness of the opposition coalition in the upcoming Lok Sabha Elections.
