In anticipation of the Ram Temple consecration in Ayodhya on January 22, the Centre has issued a stern advisory to media platforms, encompassing digital outlets, cautioning against the dissemination of false and provocative content. The advisory, directed at newspapers registered under the Press and Registration of Books Act, 1867, private satellite television channels, publishers of news and current affairs content on digital media, and social media platforms, aims to maintain communal harmony and public order during the significant event.

The advisory, released on Saturday, emphasizes the celebration of the Ram Lalla Pran Pratishtha at Ayodhya on January 22, 2024, across India. Expressing concern over the circulation of unverified, provocative, and fake messages, especially on social media, the advisory invokes the Programme Code under the Cable Television Networks Regulation Act, 1995, and the Norms of Journalistic Conduct outlined by the Press Council of India under the Press Council Act, 1978. Additionally, it refers to the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021.

The advisory underscores the obligation of newspapers, private satellite TV channels, and publishers of news and current affairs on digital media to refrain from publishing or telecasting content that may be false, manipulated, or has the potential to disturb communal harmony or public order in the country. Social media platforms are also urged to fulfill their due diligence obligations by making reasonable efforts to avoid hosting, displaying, or publishing information of the aforementioned nature.

As the country prepares for this significant religious event, the advisory serves as a reminder of the responsibilities that media platforms bear in ensuring the dissemination of accurate and responsible information, particularly during sensitive times. The Centre’s directive reflects its commitment to maintaining peace and harmony while upholding the ethical standards outlined for media platforms across various mediums.
