Mumbai: Former US President Donald Trump took a swipe at Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau during the Christmas holidays, once again referring to him as the “Governor” of Canada and suggesting what would happen if Canada became the 51st state of the United States. The remarks, posted on Trump’s social media platform, Truth Social, reignited his penchant for making controversial and provocative statements about global politics.
“Also (Merry Christmas) to Governor Justin Trudeau of Canada, whose Citizens’ Taxes are far too high,” Trump wrote, adding that if Canada joined the US, taxes would drop by 60%, businesses would flourish, and Canada would enjoy unparalleled military protection. While the comment appeared to be part of Trump’s trademark rhetoric, it raised eyebrows for its audacious suggestion about Canada’s potential annexation.
In the same string of posts, Trump claimed Greenland was “needed by the United States for National Security purposes” and extended Christmas wishes to its residents. This echoed his past interest in purchasing Greenland, which was met with ridicule and rejection by Danish officials.
Trump also turned his attention to the Panama Canal, lamenting the billions of dollars the US spends on maintenance despite relinquishing control of the critical waterway after the lease expired. The canal, which connects the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, remains a vital asset for global trade and a major revenue source for Panama.
The former president did not hold back on domestic politics either, targeting his usual adversaries. He labeled his opponents as “Radical Left Lunatics” and sent a vitriolic message to unnamed critics, telling them to “GO TO HELL!”
Trump, who served as president from 2016 to 2020, continues to polarize political discourse with his outspoken commentary. Despite losing the 2020 election to President Joe Biden—a result he still falsely claims was rigged—Trump remains a dominant figure in American politics. His latest remarks serve as yet another example of his unconventional approach to diplomacy and public communication.
