Hyderabad: Tensions between the Telugu film industry and the Congress-led Telangana government have escalated following the arrest of actor Allu Arjun, prompting both sides to engage in talks aimed at easing the strained relationship. A critical meeting is scheduled for Thursday, December 26, between key government representatives and members of the film industry to address growing concerns and foster better communication.

The controversy began after a tragic stampede occurred at a screening of Allu Arjun’s much-anticipated film Pushpa 2: The Rule at a Hyderabad theatre on December 4. The incident led to the death of a woman, sparking widespread outrage. Arjun was arrested in connection with the case, but the Telangana High Court granted him interim bail, although he spent a night in jail due to delays in processing the order.

Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy has stated that the state government had no involvement in the stampede incident, emphasizing that the law was following its due course. Despite this, the arrest and the subsequent fallout have strained the relationship between the government and the Telugu film industry, leading to calls for resolution.

Dil Raju, Chairman of the Telangana State Film Development Corporation (FDC) and a prominent film producer, announced that a delegation from the film industry would meet with CM Reddy to discuss ways to maintain “healthy relations” between the state government and the industry. This meeting comes at a crucial time, as the film industry is concerned about potential changes in government policies affecting the sector.

Adding fuel to the fire, Telangana’s Cinematography Minister Komatireddi Venkat Reddy recently made a statement suggesting that the government may consider increasing ticket prices for specific categories of films, such as those focusing on history, the freedom struggle, anti-drugs messages, or social issues. This proposed policy could have a significant impact on the high-budget films slated for release in January, including Game Changer starring Ram Charan, Daaku Maharaj with Nandamuri Balakrishna, and Sankranthiki Vasthunnam starring Venkatesh.

The outcome of Thursday’s meeting could have major implications for the future of the film industry in Telangana, as well as its relationship with the state government.
