A tragic incident shook Malaysia as at least ten people lost their lives when two Malaysian Armed Forces helicopters collided mid-air on Tuesday. The unfortunate crash occurred at the Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN) base in Lumut early in the morning.
A video of the mid-air collision has surfaced on the internet, depicting a group of military helicopters performing maneuvers over the air base when two of them collided, leading to a catastrophic crash. According to initial unconfirmed reports from local news outlets, all those on board the two helicopters did not survive the crash.
According to local reports, it is suggested that the M503-3 Maritime Operations Helicopter (HOM) had seven crew members on board, while the other, M502-6, had three members on board. Both helicopters were reportedly undergoing formation training in conjunction with Navy Day, scheduled to take place from May 3-5.
The Royal Malaysian Navy issued a statement about the incident on their official account. In its press release, the Navy confirmed the death of ten personnel in the crash. Tentera Laut Diraja Malaysia, the naval arm of the Malaysian Armed Forces, confirmed the crash involving two choppers this morning.
“TLDM confirmed that a TLDM Maritime Operation Helicopter (HOM-AW139) and a TLDM FENNEC helicopter crashed during the 90th TLDM Day Parade parade at Lumut Base at 9.32 this morning,” said the release.
“This incident involved a total of 10 people, namely 7 HOM TLDM crew and 3 Fennec TLDM crew, respectively. All the victims were confirmed to have died at the scene and were sent to the Lumut TLDM Base Army Hospital for the identification process,” the release further stated, providing information about the deceased.
The collision has brought a somber atmosphere over Malaysia, particularly among the military community. Investigations into the cause of the tragic collision are expected to commence promptly.
