In a devastating incident on Friday night, October 4, a bus carrying a wedding party plunged into a 200-feet deep gorge in Uttarakhand’s Pauri District, resulting in the tragic loss of 30 lives. Local media reports indicate that between 50 to 55 passengers were on board at the time of the accident, which occurred around 8 PM.
According to eyewitness accounts, the driver lost control of the vehicle while navigating the hilly terrain, causing it to veer off the road and into the gorge. The impact was catastrophic, leading to the deaths of the majority of those on board. Survivors with severe injuries were swiftly transported to nearby hospitals for medical treatment.
The bus was en route from Laldhang in Haridwar District to Bironkhal in Pauri, just a few kilometers away from the bride’s home. Following the tragic accident, local police and personnel from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) were dispatched to the scene for rescue operations. Local MLA Ritu Khanduri also arrived at the site and later visited the injured in the hospital.
As rescue efforts unfolded, there was no immediate confirmation of the exact number of fatalities, leading to growing frustration among locals. Many residents expressed their anger towards the authorities and staged demonstrations in response to the tragedy.
Uttarakhand, known for its picturesque but perilous mountainous terrain, frequently experiences road accidents involving vehicles falling into deep gorges and valleys. The narrow, winding roads in the hilly state leave residents with limited options for safe travel, and a single lapse in concentration can result in a tragic plunge into the valley below.
This latest tragedy is reminiscent of another recent accident in June, when a bus fell into a gorge along the Gangotri National Highway. That incident claimed three lives and injured 24 others as the bus, carrying pilgrims, was traveling from Gangotri to Uttarkashi.
The state is now mourning the loss of life and grappling with the recurring issue of road safety in the region. As investigations into the accident continue, the local community calls for improved safety measures to prevent such tragic events from occurring in the future.
