India Begins Rollout of Chip-Enabled ePassports
India has started introducing chip-enabled ePassports as part of its efforts to modernise the country’s travel documents and strengthen passport security. Although the process of applying for a passport remains exactly the same, the new ePassport comes equipped with an embedded electronic chip that helps authorities verify a traveller’s identity more quickly and securely.
The upgraded document looks almost identical to the traditional passport but includes advanced digital technology designed to reduce fraud, prevent tampering and make international travel smoother.
What Exactly Is an ePassport?
An ePassport is a regular passport that contains an embedded Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) chip and a small antenna inside the booklet. The chip securely stores the passport holder’s personal information, including the same details printed on the passport’s identity page.
Travellers can easily identify an ePassport by the small gold-coloured ePassport logo printed on the front cover. This symbol confirms that the passport contains an electronic chip.
How Does the Chip Make the Passport More Secure?
The biggest advantage of the new ePassport is its enhanced protection against identity theft and document forgery.
Instead of relying only on printed information, immigration authorities can securely read the encrypted data stored on the embedded chip. They can instantly compare the digital information with the passport itself, making it significantly more difficult for criminals to alter or duplicate travel documents.
This additional layer of authentication improves border security while reducing the risk of fraudulent passport use.
Faster Immigration at Airports
The new ePassport is also expected to make immigration clearance faster at airports equipped with electronic passport readers or automated e-gates.
Travellers simply need to place or tap their passport on the scanner. The RFID chip securely communicates with the immigration system, allowing officials to verify identity within seconds and process passengers more efficiently.
How to Apply for an ePassport
There is no separate application process for an ePassport. Applicants can follow the existing passport application procedure through the Passport Seva system.
The process includes:
- Register on the Passport Seva Portal.
- Complete the application for a new passport or passport renewal.
- Pay the applicable fee online.
- Schedule an appointment at the nearest Passport Seva Kendra (PSK) or Post Office Passport Seva Kendra (POPSK).
- Visit the selected centre for document verification and biometric capture.
Eligible applicants will receive the new chip-enabled ePassport as the government’s phased rollout expands across the country.
What It Means for Travellers
The introduction of ePassports marks a significant step in India’s digital travel infrastructure. While the passport continues to function like a conventional travel document, the addition of secure chip technology is expected to improve identity verification, strengthen security and make international travel faster and more convenient for Indian citizens.
