Chennai: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin on Saturday appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to reconsider the Centre’s rejection of Metro Rail proposals for Coimbatore and Madurai, emphasizing the urgent need for high-capacity public transport in the state’s major cities.

In a letter addressed to PM Modi, CM Stalin expressed his “disappointment and anguish” over the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs’ (MoHUA) decision, calling it a “complete surprise” given the constant communication between state officials and the ministry.

Stalin stressed that Tamil Nadu, as the most urbanized state in India with a high rate of private vehicle ownership, requires modern mass transit solutions to ease congestion and support sustainable growth. “I urge you to instruct the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs to reconsider their decision. High-capacity public transport is essential for all our large and fast-growing cities,” he wrote.
