Mumbai: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma applauded the NCERT’s recent decision to remove the term “Great” from references to Akbar and Tipu Sultan in school textbooks. Speaking to the media, Sarma said, “Very well done… I have not seen whether they have done this. If they have done this, then many thanks to the NCERT from my side.”
Taking a strong stance, the CM further remarked, “‘Tipu-Ipu ko maro ekdum. Jahan bhejna hai, udhar hi bhej do. Samundar mein phek do…’” highlighting his disapproval of glorifying historical figures he believes should not be revered uncritically. The comments come amid ongoing debates over historical narratives in Indian school education and efforts to revise the portrayal of certain rulers in textbooks.
