Bhiwandi: Another nine bodies including four kids (aged between 2 to 6 years) were pulled out from the debris of the ill-fated Jilani apartment between late Tuesday night till now on Wednesday. So far 25 people who sustained injuries were rescued from the crash site. According to an official from the Regional Disaster Management Cell (RDMC) relief and rescue operations are still going on.
At the time of going to the press in the wee hours of Wednesday the death toll is now 39 dead that include 15 children. Twenty-five people sustained injuries when the 34 year old three storied Jilani apartment building collapsed at Dhamankar Naka area of Bhiwandi city near Mumbai on Monday.
The death toll on Tuesday rose to 26 dead which includes 11 children, by then no one was pulled out alive from the debris since Tuesday until Wednesday. By mid-night the death toll rose to 30 that included 15 children, informed the RDMC official.
The death toll reached 33 dead in the wee hours of Wednesday. More dead bodies were pulled out from rubble and much of the dead included those who lived on the first and second floor of the building. Three teams of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) along with two teams of Thane Disaster Response Force (TDRF) were engaged in the rescue operations.
Three more dead bodies were recovered from debris on Wednesday morning. The death toll rose to 35 and no one was pulled out alive so far. Around two to five persons in each family have lost their loved ones.
Speaking to thenews21 Santosh Kadam chief of TDRF said, “We suspect that on the basis of talking with the surviving occupants of the building there might be 10 more people feared trapped under the debris. The rescue operation and work to remove the debris is being conducted on a war footing”. He further said that the rescue operation is expected to be winded up by the evening.
The constant heavy downpour since the last few days recorded in the Bhiwandi city hindered the rescue operations and clearing of the debris.-By Narendra Gupta
