TheNews21 Fact Check: Will Mumbai Become Muslim-Majority by 2047? Checking Sunil Deodhar’s Claims

BJP leader Sunil Deodhar, in a video message, claims a significant rise in the Muslim population and urges Hindu communities to stay vigilant.

Mr Deodhar’s message :

Every five years, at the Vidhan Sabha level, the Muslim population appears to increase by 5,000 to 10,000. A TISS report states that by 2047, 50% of Mumbai’s population will be Muslim. In many districts across the country, as Muslims have become the majority, Hindus are being forced to migrate.

Looking at the bigger picture, Hindus must seriously consider the idea that ‘Ghatenge Toh Katenge’ and ‘If we will be Majority, then only we will be safe.’

Claim 1: Muslim population increases by 5,000-10,000 per Vidhan Sabha every five years

🔎 Verification:

India’s population growth data is officially recorded by Census, NFHS (National Family Health Survey), and NITI Aayog. However, there is no official government data to support the claim that Muslim population increases by 5,000-10,000 per Vidhan Sabha every five years.

According to the 2011 Census, the growth rate of the Muslim population was 24.6%, while the Hindu growth rate was 16.8%. However, these figures are national-level trends, not specific to each constituency.

✅ Verdict: False Claim ❌

Claim 2: A TISS report states that Mumbai will be 50% Muslim by 2047

🔎 Verification:

TISS (Tata Institute of Social Sciences) is not known for making such long-term population forecasts. There is no official report confirming this claim.

As per the 2011 Census, Mumbai’s Hindu population was 66% and Muslims were 21%. While demographic shifts can occur due to migration and economic factors, there is no concrete research supporting the claim that Mumbai’s Muslim population will reach 50% by 2047.

✅ Verdict: Unverified Claim ❌

Claim 3: Hindus are being forced to migrate from Muslim-majority districts

🔎 Verification:

Demographic shifts have occurred in some areas, but migration is influenced by multiple factors such as economic opportunities, urbanization, and political instability.

• Muzaffarnagar (2013 riots), Kashmir (1989-90 Hindu exodus), and Assam (illegal immigration concerns)—these regions have seen demographic changes due to communal tensions.

• However, migration trends in Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, West Bengal, and Kerala suggest that economic reasons play a bigger role than religious factors.

• Urban migration is a natural socio-economic process and should not be seen purely as religious displacement.

✅ Verdict: Partially True, but Exaggerated ⚠️

Final Verdict: How True Are Sunil Deodhar’s Claims?

✅ Claim 1 (Muslim population increases by 5,000-10,000 per Vidhan Sabha) – False ❌

✅ Claim 2 (TISS Report – Mumbai will be 50% Muslim by 2047) – Unverified ❌

✅ Claim 3 (Hindus migrating from Muslim-majority areas) – Partially True, but Context Matters ⚠️

💡 Conclusion:

Sunil Deodhar’s claims are not backed by official government or research data. Before believing such claims, it is important to verify them with credible sources and official statistics.
