New Delhi: Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju on Monday strongly criticized opposition to the proposed Waqf Amendment Bill, alleging that those against it are “powerful people” who have “encroached upon Waqf properties” and are “misguiding” the public. He asserted that while criticism is a fundamental right, it must be based on valid reasoning.
“Who are those opposing this bill? Some powerful individuals have encroached upon Waqf properties and are misleading people. They claim the bill is unconstitutional, but criticism must have substance,” Rijiju told news agency.
The bill has found support from several religious organizations, including the Kerala Catholic Bishops’ Council (KCBC). The KCBC sent a letter urging MPs from Kerala to back the amendment, citing concerns from Christian communities over alleged land seizures by the Waqf board. Rijiju welcomed this support, stating that the bill aims to benefit poor Muslims, children, and women while ensuring greater accountability and transparency in managing Waqf properties.
“The request letter from the KCBC is crucial. Many religious groups support the Waqf (Amendment) Bill because it prioritizes the interests of poor Muslims, women, and children while ensuring transparent governance of Waqf properties,” Rijiju added.
Kerala BJP President Rajeev Chandrasekhar backed the bill, arguing that it addresses long-standing concerns of families in Munambam, near Cochin, who fear losing their land to the Waqf board. He urged Kerala MPs to support the bill instead of engaging in “appeasement politics.”
“Many Christian organizations, including the KCBC, are urging Kerala MPs to take a stand on the Waqf (Amendment) Bill and vote in favor of it. In Kerala, hundreds of poor families are living under the threat of losing their land to the Waqf board. This is an issue they have been protesting against for years, and it is time for Kerala MPs to fulfill their duty by standing with the people rather than engaging in appeasement politics,” Chandrasekhar told news agency.
