Kashmir: In a shocking act of violence, at least one person was killed and five others injured after 2–3 terrorists disguised in military uniforms opened fire on tourists in the Baisran area of Pahalgam, located in South Kashmir’s Anantnag district, on Tuesday. The attackers struck at the popular tourist meadow during the peak travel season, sparking widespread fear and condemnation.

According to reports, the terrorists opened indiscriminate fire on a group of tourists, injuring two local and three non-local individuals. A female tourist made a distress call to the Kashmir Police’s PCR, reporting that her husband had been critically injured, sustaining bullet wounds to the head.

Security forces responded swiftly, rushing to the scene and launching a massive cordon-and-search operation to neutralize the threat. The entire area has been placed on high alert, with additional reinforcements deployed to secure the region and reassure the influx of tourists.

This attack comes at a particularly sensitive time, as the Kashmir Valley prepares for the Amarnath Yatra, a 38-day annual pilgrimage set to begin on July 3. The pilgrimage, which attracts thousands of devotees from across the country, will proceed along two routes: a 48-km trail through Pahalgam in Anantnag and a 14-km route via Baltal in Ganderbal district.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah, during his recent visit to the Union Territory, chaired a high-level security meeting where he directed security agencies to completely eliminate terrorism from the region. He also emphasized a zero-tolerance policy towards infiltration, especially with heightened concerns in Jammu and Kashmir.

Former Jammu & Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti condemned the attack in strong terms, stating on social media: “Such violence is unacceptable and must be denounced.” Mufti claimed that five tourists had been killed and several injured, although official figures currently confirm one death and five injuries.
