Mumbai: Actress Tanushree Dutta, who recently made headlines with an emotional video alleging harassment inside her Mumbai home, is back in the spotlight—this time for her dietary choices. Days after the viral video, the former Miss India posted a new clip discussing the health benefits of eating mutton and how her food habits align with Ayurvedic principles, where food is considered a form of medicine.
The video sparked controversy online after she revealed that she consumed a protein-rich meal including mutton, rice, and kaali dal shortly after observing a Shravan fast, a religious observance where many devout Hindus abstain from non-vegetarian food.
While some followers appreciated her honest and personal take on fasting and wellness, others criticized her for breaking tradition. One user sarcastically commented, “Shravan… fast… mutton… fat… #respect,” adding a laughing emoji, implying that her meal violated the sanctity of the holy month.
Tanushree responded strongly, calling out the judgmental attitude. She explained that in Bengali culture, many fasts, especially during religious festivals, involve abstaining from food and water till evening, followed by the consumption of bhog (offering to the goddess), which traditionally includes goat meat. “Different cultures are different, shouldn’t be any judgement,” she asserted, urging viewers to understand regional customs before passing remarks.
In the video, Tanushree emphasized the importance of mindful eating, particularly when dealing with stress, anxiety, or mental health challenges. “Food is medicine,” she said, detailing how her customized diet helps her remain mentally resilient and physically strong. Her approach blends traditional practices with modern nutritional science, offering a different perspective on how religious fasting can be adapted to individual health needs.
Her Instagram caption read: “So I fasted today for Shravan till 7 pm and then cooked this high-nutrition kaali dal with mutton and rice for dinner. Religious fasts don’t need to be rigid; one can customise according to physical needs. Fasting builds mental strength, and post-fast, I nourish my body with high protein so it remains in top-performing condition.”
