At least 19 people were killed and several others injured after a massive explosion ripped through a firecracker manufacturing unit in Virudhunagar district of Tamil Nadu on Sunday, triggering a major fire and rescue operation in the area.
Massive Explosion at Firecracker Unit
The blast occurred at a fireworks manufacturing facility in the Kattanarpatti area of Virudhunagar district, where dozens of workers were present when the explosion took place.
According to officials, the impact of the blast was so intense that it caused extensive destruction inside the factory premises, trapping workers under the debris and setting off a large fire.
The incident was later confirmed by Tamil Nadu fire and rescue services, which rushed emergency teams to the spot soon after the explosion.
Rescue Teams Recover Bodies From Debris
Police officials said that around 30 workers were inside the unit at the time of the explosion.
Firefighters battled the flames for nearly an hour before bringing the fire under control. Rescue personnel then began searching through the wreckage and recovered multiple bodies from the debris.
Superintendent of Police N Shreenatha said the rescue operation continued after the blaze was contained, while injured workers were shifted to nearby hospitals for treatment.
Authorities fear that the casualty count may rise as some of the injured are reported to be in critical condition.
