Mumbai: Senior NCP (SP) leader and MP Supriya Sule has strongly criticised the alleged incident involving Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, after a video surfaced showing him purportedly removing a woman’s hijab during a public event. Reacting to the viral clip, Sule said that no one has the right to interfere in a woman’s personal choices, especially those linked to tradition, culture, or faith.

Speaking in Mumbai, Sule emphasised that every woman comes from a family with its own customs and values, and the way she chooses to dress — whether it is a hijab, pallu, or any other form of attire — is a personal decision. She said such choices are shaped by family traditions and individual beliefs, and must be respected in a democratic society.

Sule added that interfering in how a woman dresses is unacceptable and goes against the principles of dignity, freedom, and equality. Her remarks come amid growing political outrage over the video, which has sparked a national debate on women’s autonomy and the conduct of public representatives.

The controversy has triggered sharp reactions from opposition parties, who have questioned the behaviour of those holding constitutional positions and demanded accountability. While supporters of the Bihar Chief Minister have attempted to downplay the incident, criticism continues to mount across party lines.
