New Delhi: A three-judge bench of the Supreme Court, led by Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna, is set to hear petitions challenging the constitutional validity of the Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025, on April 16. The bench will also include Justices Sanjay Kumar and KV Viswanathan, according to the court’s official website.
The petitions, over ten in number, have been filed by a range of parties, including prominent politicians, the All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB), and Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind. These petitions question the legitimacy of the recently passed law, which was notified by the central government on Tuesday.
In a related development, the Centre has filed a caveat in the Supreme Court, requesting that no order be passed before hearing its arguments in the matter. A caveat is typically filed by a party to prevent the court from issuing any order without giving the party an opportunity to present its case.
