New Delhi: The Supreme Court has ordered the Maharashtra government and the State Election Commission (SEC) to hold local body elections in the state by January 31, 2026. The bench, comprising Justices Surya Kant and Joymalya Bagchi, emphasized the need for timely action and directed the authorities to complete the delimitation exercise by October 10 this year.
The top court expressed concern over the delay by the State Election Commission, noting that despite a previous order on May 6, which instructed the SEC to notify elections within four weeks and conduct them within four months, there was a lack of prompt action.
In its latest order, the Supreme Court granted an extension for conducting the elections according to the newly prescribed schedule. The bench, however, made it clear that no further extension will be allowed, underscoring the importance of adhering to the timeline.
