New Delhi: The Supreme Court has directed the Uttar Pradesh government to submit a status report concerning a dispute over a well located near the Shahi Jama Masjid in Sambhal. The petition, filed by the mosque’s Committee of Management, seeks to maintain the status quo regarding the well, which is situated near the mosque’s entrance.

A bench led by Chief Justice Sanjeev Khanna and Justice Sanjay Kumar heard the case on Friday. The Uttar Pradesh government contended that the well is a public resource, not private property as claimed by the mosque committee. It also assured the Court that the situation in the area remains peaceful.

The mosque committee argued that the well is integral to the mosque’s water supply and any interference could disrupt its operations. They requested the Supreme Court to prohibit any action by the district administration without prior judicial approval.

The Court has granted the Uttar Pradesh government two weeks to provide a detailed status report on the matter. The next hearing is scheduled for February 21, where the situation will be reviewed based on the state’s report.
