In a significant development, the Supreme Court has swiftly responded to Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s plea, seeking relief from the Enforcement Directorate’s (ED) custody in the liquor policy case. The urgency of the matter was underscored by a statement from Chief Justice of India D.Y. Chandrachud, who assured Kejriwal’s counsel, senior advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi, that a special bench, presided over by Justice Sanjiv Khanna, would convene promptly to address the issue.

“A special bench is convening in Justice Sanjiv Khanna’s court. You can go right away and it will be taken up right away,” stated the Bench, affirming the gravity and immediacy with which the matter is being handled.

This development follows CM Kejriwal’s appeal to the apex court after the Delhi High Court’s denial of protection against “coercive action” by the ED. The ED has issued multiple summons to Kejriwal in connection with the excise policy case, prompting him to seek urgent intervention from the highest judicial authority.

The urgency of the situation is further highlighted by the fact that the special bench, headed by Justice Khanna, is concurrently hearing a plea filed by BRS leader K. Kavitha, challenging her arrest by the ED in the now-defunct Delhi excise policy case. Kejriwal’s plea before the apex court seeks the quashing of his arrest, indicating the high stakes involved in the legal battle against the ED’s actions.

Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud’s decision to assign Kejriwal’s plea for immediate hearing before a bench headed by Justice Sanjiv Khanna today underscores the judiciary’s commitment to addressing pressing matters of public interest with expediency and diligence.
