Sunetra Pawar Crosses 50,000-Vote Lead in Baramati By-Poll, Turns Contest One-Sided

The Baramati Assembly by-election in Maharashtra has taken a decisive turn as Sunetra Pawar has established a massive and widening lead after six rounds of counting, effectively putting the result beyond doubt.

According to official figures released by the Election Commission of India, Sunetra Pawar has secured 53,478 votes so far. Her tally has grown steadily across rounds, with a sharp jump in the latest update adding more than 8,000 votes in a single count. The margin now places her far ahead of all other candidates in the fray.

Opposition fails to gain ground
The remaining candidates have struggled to make any meaningful impact. Most contenders remain below even a few hundred votes, with the nearest rival still far behind. NOTA has also recorded a small share, but it does not alter the overall picture of dominance.

Vote gap expands rapidly across rounds
From the very first round, Sunetra Pawar had established a clear lead, which continued to grow consistently—moving from a comfortable margin in early counting to a massive gap crossing tens of thousands of votes. By the sixth round, the contest has effectively turned into a one-sided affair.

Political context in Baramati
The by-election was necessitated after a vacancy in the constituency earlier this year, a seat historically associated with strong influence from the Pawar family. Sunetra Pawar, contesting on an NCP ticket, has benefited from a strong local organisational base and consolidation of support in the region.

Counting process underway under tight security
Vote counting began at 8 AM at the State Warehousing Corporation centre in Baramati, with a large deployment of officials and security personnel to ensure smooth proceedings. Each round has consistently shown an expanding lead for the front-runner.

Outcome nearly sealed
With the margin now exceeding 50,000 votes and no visible challenge from opponents, the result appears largely settled even as formal counting continues. The trend reinforces the continuing political strength of the Pawar influence in Baramati and is expected to have wider implications in Maharashtra’s political landscape.
