Strong Earthquake Strikes Drake Passage Between South America and Antarctica

Washington: A powerful earthquake shook the Drake Passage, the oceanic region separating South America and Antarctica, on Friday morning, according to seismic authorities. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) initially reported the quake as magnitude 8, but later revised it to 7.5. Other agencies reported slightly different readings: the German Research Center for Geosciences (GRCG) measured it at 7.1, while India’s National Center for Seismology (NCS) recorded a magnitude of 7.4.

The earthquake struck at a shallow depth of 10.8 km around 7:46 am IST, with coordinates at 60.26° S latitude and 61.85° W longitude. Authorities have confirmed that no tsunami warnings have been issued, and as of now, there are no reports of damage or casualties from the region.

This event comes amid a series of significant seismic activities worldwide. In July, Russia’s Kamchatka region experienced a magnitude 8.8 earthquake, generating tsunami waves between 9.8 and 13.1 feet near Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky. Earlier this month, Turkey’s Balikesir province was hit by a 6.1 magnitude quake, which destroyed several buildings and injured multiple residents, with tremors felt as far as Istanbul, roughly 200 km away.
