Amritsar: At least 14 people have lost their lives and six others are battling for their lives in hospitals after allegedly consuming spurious liquor in Majitha, a town near Amritsar. The incident has triggered a political storm and raised serious questions about law enforcement and governance in Punjab.

Congress MP from Amritsar, Gurjeet Singh Aujla, came down heavily on the state government, accusing it of gross negligence and inaction. “This is a failure of the police and administration. It (liquor) is being sold openly. The CM, Home Minister, Excise Minister and officials do not know what is happening on the ground? Is it not their responsibility? The liquor mafia must be punished,” Aujla said.

Locals in Majitha said several people began to fall ill after consuming locally procured liquor on Sunday evening. By Monday morning, the death toll started rising, sending shockwaves through the community. Authorities have sealed several liquor shops in the area and sent samples for forensic testing.

District officials have confirmed the casualties and stated that an investigation is underway. Post-mortem reports are awaited to ascertain the exact cause of death.
