In a political maneuver that has raised eyebrows across Maharashtra, Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray’s recent announcement of “unconditional” support to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has drawn sharp criticism from Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut.

Raut, known for his outspokenness, questioned the motives behind Thackeray’s sudden pivot, suggesting that there may be undisclosed reasons prompting the alliance. “Now what kind of miracle has happened suddenly, we should ask this from him (Raj Thackeray). You have suddenly turned around and are supporting the enemies of Maharashtra, what will you tell the public? What is the reason behind this? Which file has been opened?” Raut remarked, hinting at potential behind-the-scenes dealings.

Thackeray’s unexpected move, which aligns MNS with the ruling alliance of BJP, Shiv Sena, and NCP, has stirred controversy, especially given his estranged relationship with Uddhav Thackeray, the leader of Shiv Sena. Thackeray’s declaration of support, explicitly directed towards Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the NDA alliance, has left many political observers puzzled.

During an event in Maharashtra, Thackeray declared, “Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) unconditionally supports the grand alliance of ‘BJP-Shiv Sena-NCP. This support is only for Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the NDA alliance.” He emphasized his longstanding relationship with the BJP, dating back to the 1990s, and his advocacy for Narendra Modi as Prime Minister.

Thackeray’s assertions, particularly his assertion of never making personal comments against PM Modi, have further fueled speculation about the underlying dynamics at play.

The Congress party, however, did not mince words in its criticism of Thackeray’s decision. Congress leader Vijay Wadettiwar likened Thackeray’s transformation to that of a tiger turning into a lamb, expressing disbelief at the rapid shift in allegiance. “Will a fighter like Raj Thackeray become a slave?” Wadettiwar questioned, reflecting the skepticism prevalent among opposition circles.
