Mumbai: The family and political rivalry between Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) and Shiv Sena is well known and it has once again flared up in a face off over a civic issue. These two parties are now clashing with each other over the renaming of the cremation ground at Kurla.

The Hindu cremation ground at Kurla named after late Meenatai Thackeray a year ago. Now political chaos has erupted among these parties. Shiv Sena opposes saying “Do not give name of great people to cremation ground”. While the MNS alleges that “Shiv Sena is opposing just for political purpose and hate”.

On January 7, 2019 at the initiative of MNS corporator Sanjay Turde it was confirmed to name the cremation ground at Sonapur lane in the name of “Late Meenatai Balasaheb Thackeray” in a BMC meeting. All party corporators had even supported this resolution.

But later local Shiv Sena MLA Sanjay Potnis from Kurla wrote a letter to the leader of the house in Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) Vishakha Raut and requested her to cancel the resolution passed on March 17, 2020. He even requested to take strict action on it.

In the written letter Sanjay Potnis stated “Ma Saheb Meenatai Thackeray is the powerhouse of lakhs of Shivsainik. One should not give names of great people to cremation grounds where we bury dead people. Therefore BMC should cancel this resolution and remove Meenatai’s name board” he informed.

Speaking to thenews21 MNS corporator Sanjay Turde said “The resolution has already passed if taken back we will protest. With the support of 227 corporators we have passed it in BMC. I personally think MLA should do the work of MLA not interfere in Corporator’s work.”- By Rishikesh Chavan
