New Delhi: Student activist Sharjeel Imam, who has been in Tihar Jail for over five years in connection with the 2020 Delhi riots “larger conspiracy” case, has filed a fresh plea seeking interim bail to contest the upcoming Bihar Assembly elections.

Imam submitted his application before Additional Sessions Judge Sameer Bajpai at the Karkardooma Courts, requesting a two-week bail from October 15 to 29. The interim release, he says, is necessary for him to file nomination papers and manage election preparations as an Independent candidate from the Bahadurganj constituency in Bihar.

In his plea, Imam described himself as a “political prisoner and student activist” and emphasized that he is contesting independently, without affiliation to any political party. He also cited practical difficulties, noting that his younger brother—the only family member available to manage his campaign—is currently caring for their ailing mother.

The nomination process for the 18th Bihar Legislative Assembly elections began on October 13 and will conclude on October 20, making Imam’s presence in Bahadurganj essential to complete the required formalities.

Last month, the Delhi High Court had rejected Imam’s petition for regular bail in the ongoing Delhi riots case. He currently has a pending appeal against that decision before the Supreme Court.
