SC Issues Notice to Dera Chief Ram Rahim on CBI Plea Challenging Acquittal in 2002 Murder Case

New Delhi: In a significant development, the Supreme Court on Friday issued a notice to Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh and four others, in response to a plea filed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) challenging their acquittal in the 2002 murder case of Ranjit Singh, the former manager of the sect.

A bench comprising Chief Justice of India Sanjeev Khanna and Justice Sanjay Kumar directed the notice and sought a response from Ram Rahim and the other accused. The case has been tagged with another pending appeal, filed by the complainant, the father of the deceased, who had also challenged the acquittal in the Punjab and Haryana High Court.

The bench further noted that the matter would be heard by a bench headed by Justice Bela Trivedi, who had previously issued a notice in the appeal filed by the complainant. “Our attention has been drawn to the office report dated September 9, 2024, of the order passed by the bench of Justice Bela Trivedi, issue notice and tag with… the SLP be listed before the bench presided by Justice Bela Trivedi,” the bench ordered.
